thanks all. the trip to colorado was lovely. i'm well stocked to survive my crippling depression a while longer

i think my heart's with boulder, with its hippie vibes and gorgeous mountainscapes, though denver was fine

jesus i just spent like 10 min looking at summit county maps for suggestions and it made me really nostalgic for CO

Greys and Torrys is a dope hike (14ers!!!). This says its difficult, I'd put it on the difficult side of moderate.

Spruce Lake to Mohawk Lake (firmly moderate, that late in the year)

i love Oahu to bits, and i certainly like the weather, and its obviously scenic in its own right, but its a pretty tiny place.

like the entire island of Oahu is the same size as summit county. I definitely miss the vastness of the mountains. being up at alpine visitors center looking into the infinite distance, racing bikes up mount evans, or riding over berthoud or loveland pass or the copper triangle.

not like i did a lot of hiking or pass bagging in my last few years but man it was such a fun time.

Grand Lake is about 2 hours. Car camping just outside the West side of Rocky Mountain NP

East Inslet trail is great, has a huge meadow and a lake with a sandy shore further up. Pretty sure you don't have to pay park entry fees over there

Black Betty, that sounds awesome. Could you drop a pin and share the map coordinates or something? I've been going to the same few spots for forever but haven't found anything good near water

Hey friends, I just got into town and had my ritualistic first meal at El Taco de Mexico. Anyone going to Carly Rae or Classixx? Not sure about tonight, but I'm definitely gonna catch Classixx tomorrow.

My friends and I ended up booking a campsite in Idaho Springs for Friday and Saturday night. The forecast is looking slightly spotty, so it's hard to say how much hiking we'll actually get to do. I suppose at worst we could just go hang out at Indian Hot Springs and drink beer

Any recs on good hikes within an hour of there? One thing I'm super interested in is hiking out to a natural hot spring. It would be super fun to take a dip in a mountain lake as well

Quandary looks beautiful. What is the worst to expect from that hike? I'm not in the best hiking shape, so I wanna make sure I don't do something beyond me

Looking at the Gaia map, looks like the sandy lake is called Lone Pine Lake Image

Good chance you'll see moose in the meadow. There's hike-in campsites all the way up

This site/book I can highly recommend for finding good trails (uses a star ranking system) http://www.utahtrails.com/Colorado%20pages/EastInlet.html

I've done car camping here on the west/north side of the lake. it's free and first come first serve

Looks like you could also camp on the lake:

that fri/sat idaho springs forecast looks fairly typical for summer.

i'd avoid being above treeline after like 1-2pm because of lightning, regardless of what the forecast says. most people start their hikes early because of this. a 6am start for a big hike is totally common in order to be off the ridge by noon or so. people die every year because of lightning. don't follow along with the herd heading up some barren 12,000+ ridge when you see a storm closely approaching. you might already know all this, sorry...

quandary is amazing. for many it's their first 14er. i would do it. get a mega early start though. it isn't too difficult. just bring way more water than you'd expect. if you can walk 5 miles on a beach you can hack your way up/down quandary. it will prob be a 1.5-2 hr drive from idaho springs though

I definitely appreciate the advice. I'm definitely not the most experienced mountain hiker, but it's something I've always longed to do more regularly

yeah i cant stress enough the seriousness of being on your way down, below treeline by noon or 1.

weather forcasts legit dont mean shit at altitude and i’ve personally been in a few life-or-death, holy-shit high altitude surprise storms. and heard some real scary stories from others.

being at sea level its been pretty tough to unlearn that anxiety. if i’m on a hike here and havent summitted by like 10am i get twitchy and have to remind myself theres basically no environmental threats hiking in hawaii. no cold, no lightning, we dont even have like snakes or bears or anything. just mosquitos and bad water.

saw a couple hiking with a baby in one of those back carriers above treeline once. they were headed up when we were headed down as a rough looking storm rolled in. seemed not a good place and time to bring a baby.

I'm in Denver this weekend for a wedding and essentially have a free day on Sunday. Any recommendations of what to do? I'm not really an eat my way across the city type of person; more so trying to find some pocket of culture and photograph it if possible. Hiking is cool, too.

five points and little saigon have both been whittled down to a single intersection over the last ten years. mexican/central american culture is still strong, but there's no real epicenter anymore.

tbh, the only area in denver that still feels real is south broadway. but it's all young white hipsters.

might be the best bet to just go for a hike. my favorite close to town hike is mount falcon up to the castle. just drive out to morrison (I 70 to c470) then take highway 8 south and look for the brown mount falcon sign. it's hot this time of year and it'll take like an hour to get up so bring food and water.

i know it's touristy and crowded, but the drive up to mount evans is spectacular and wouldnt take a ton of time. There are little trails off the road to do some proper hiking as well.
