Have you seen any of his 50s movies, and if so do you have a favorite?

The set design in La Ronde and Lola Mantis is totally incredible, some of the biggest sets I've ever seen. The thing that the latter does too, where it's shot in Cinemascope and then it keeps having this fuzzy, porous black border that encroaches in on the sides of the frame, just so good.

Marriage Story (Baumbach)

Incredible film. Just amazing performances by Johansson and Driver and, to be fair, everyone in the film. Blown away beyond belief.

The Intern - Absolutely psycho movie, watched it on a plane all hopped up on cold medicine. De Niro's greatest 21st century performance? Five bloody stars

I've only seen two and I would consider them both recommended viewing. Lola Montes is my favourite, The Earrings Of Madame de is great also.

Garden Of Evil (1954)- Henry Hathaway
Liked it.
Image
Gilda (1946)- Charles Vidor
Really liked this. Rita Hayworth rules in this.
Image
Gubijinso (1935)- Kenji Mizoguchi
This was great. Loved seeing techniques would Mizoguchi would refine later on.
Image
Hard Eight (1996)- Paul Thomas Anderson
This is a low key near masterpiece. Phillip Baker Hall owns like no other in this.
Image
He Walked By Night (1948)- Alfred L. Werker, Anthony Mann
Short but awesome noir. Has some of the most stunning cinematography I've ever seen.

Lady Snowblood 2: Love Song of Vengeance (Toshiya Fujita, 1974)

These movies are pretty excellent at being specifically what they are. Yeah it's not as good as the first one and I like the idea of a political plot but it all eventually runs through a kind of weak supporting character so eh. Good atmosphere and some nice shooting.

Image
The Old Dark House (Whale, 1932)

Unfortunately I thought this stunk. I can see why people would be a fan of this like, progenitor of campy horror comedy but very little of what was going on here worked for me, except the guy offering people potatoes.

Aquaman (Wan, 2018)

I have no interest at all in the DC universe shit that's been churned out but this seemed like it would work OK for me and maybe not traumatize my child. I loved it, truly, I thought it was a perfectly executed comic book movie. I knew this was My Kinda Fuckin Movie when they went into the underwater battle arena and there was an octopus playing drums but it just keeps moving the dial the whole movie toward "yeah, fuck it" until a dude in an underwater space marine armor riding a giant alligator is charging to attack a bunch of giant crab people shooting lava mortars and Blade Runner 2049 can go to hell, Aquaman is a modern masterpiece.

Depeche Mode's It's no good is in this movie. In a scene where black manta is making is new gear. It seemed so random to me i can't help but mention it every time someone mentions this film even if clearly nobody cares

Leave Her To Heaven (1945)- John M. Stahl
Really liked this. Gene Tierney was excellent in this.
Image
Leon Morin, Priest (1961)- Jean-Pierre Melville
This ruled.
Image
Libeled Lady (1936)- Jack Conway
This was quite enjoyable, with solid performances from the main cast, especially Harlow and Loy.
Image
Lonely Are The Brave (1962)- David Miller
This was good for the performances.
Image
Lonesome (1928)- Paul Fejos
This was amazing.
Image
Long Day's Journey Into Night (1962)- Sidney Lumet
What a masterpiece, though it isn't hard to see why. Contains breathtakingly riveting performances from Hepburn, Richardson, Robards, and Stockwell.

Raging Bull (1980): I can't decide whether this should go in Action Movies or Old Movies or what. It doesn't fit neatly into any of our threads. I want to talk about it but I don't know exactly what I want to say, beyond that I think the biggest tragedy of the movie is Cathy Moriarty's (lack of) career.

The King of Comedy (1983): just absolutely bizarre. Does this movie exist without the Hinckley shooting? I don't know, but its relationship to that (presumably) inciting event is perplexing.

Sandra Bernhard has maybe the most disturbing face I've ever seen. I find it just viscerally upsetting. The shape of her mouth, the perpetual belligerent sneer. Perfect for this role, but what is it like to live in that.

i have to begrudgingly give credit to the mcu for their role in giving me back my agency to unabashedly talk about how great martin scorsese films are without having someone call me a bro intellectual

i'm back to being a regular highly intelligent intellectual now

I really can’t say I’ve liked the recent films of his I’ve seen, but I do like Taxi Driver and Goodfellas a lot and Casino to some extent too. I really need to fill in the gaps though.
